HTLV-1 and HIV-1 share genomic features but differ in latency. Prof Satou and his team have identified an intragenic silencer in HTLV-1 that recruits RUNX1 to suppress expression. The mutation of the silencer boosts replication, and its insertion into HIV-1 reduces production. This highlights a key mechanism regulating retroviral latency and persistence, which Prof Satou will discuss in this seminar.

Yorifumi Satou is a Professor of Genomics and Transcriptomics at Kumamoto University. His research focuses on human retroviruses, particularly HTLV-1 and HIV-1. He has contributed to the discovery of viral regulatory mechanisms and developed advanced methods for proviral analysis, aiming to understand viral latency and persistence for therapeutic innovation.
