Martins is an epidemiologist specializing in the control and elimination of infectious diseases in low- and middle-income settings. He completed his BSc in Biochemistry and MSc in Epidemiology in Nigeria. His previous research has focused on the control of malaria, tuberculosis, and neglected tropical diseases in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. Martins is a PhD candidate at the NTD Research Group at the Kirby Institute, where his research explores the end-game challenges in the elimination of onchocerciasis in Angola and Nigeria
