Monitoring HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake in Australia: Issue 13

This report uses data extracted from every PrEP prescription supplied in Australia through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) between 1 April 2018 and 30 Dec 2025. Data are presented on the total number of people who have ever initiated PBS-subsidised PrEP, as well as the number of people dispensed PrEP within the past 12 months. These data are disaggregated by age, and by state/territory.

Key findings

As of 30 Jun 2024, 91,287 people had received PBS-subsidised PrEP at least once. There were 49,720 people who received PrEP in the last 12 months by Apr-Jun 2025. There were 2,839 who accessed PrEP via PBS for the first time between Apr-Jun 2025.
