Monitoring HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake in Australia: Issue 14

This report uses data extracted from every PrEP prescription supplied in Australia through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) between 1 January 2021 and 31 Dec 2025. Data are presented on the total number of people who have ever initiated PBS-subsidised PrEP, as well as the number of people dispensed PrEP within the past 12 months. These data are disaggregated by age, and by state/territory.

Key findings
  • As of 31 Dec 2025, 97,172 people had received PBS-subsidised PrEP at least once.
  • There were 51,727 people who received PrEP in the last 12 months by Oct-Dec 2025.
  • There were 2,932 who accessed PrEP via PBS for the first time between Oct-Dec 2025.
